A Tisket A Tasket

Our recent spell of summer weather has made it possible to squeeze in one last picnic before the Autumn resumes in full force. There is something so romantic about a picnic. Even the straight-laced Victorians thought so.
During the 19th century the 'Picnic Basket Auction' was one of the summer's biggest social events. The ladies would each design and fill a basket with homemade delicacies and baked goods and the baskets would then be anonymously auctioned to the town's menfolk who would bid on their favourite.
Winning bidders would win not just the basket but an intimate lunch of the contents with the basket's maker. Naturally those crafty Victorian ladies would be seeking a nice husband out of the deal and would ensure that their offerings were irresistible. I'd like to imagine that a few hairpins were lost during the ensuing picnic in the tall grass.
