The Great Eastern Hotel redefined what a London hotel could be, managing to cater to the suits during the week, while courting East End hep-cats at the weekend with sleepover club nights, cutting-edge art, and indoor beach bars.

This week the GEH turns into Andaz (not sure about the name - sounds a bit like a herbal energy drink to me!), the first in the Hyatt group's new brand of 'casual luxury' hotels.

Liverpool Street is London's frontline: East End cool one side, Loadsamoney t'other - Andaz is trying to get a bit of both. It claims to be more home from home than hotel and has done away with such conventions as check in desks and concierges - you check in on a tablet PC. The staff are all 'equal' (bet they're not all paid equally!) and untitled, and all aim to fulfil your wildest whim. The things that usually treble the bill - breakfast, Internet, mini-bar, local telephone calls and movies - are free.

A programme of comedy and literary events should help to bring Londoners through the doors, while a selection of art from East End artists should keep the locals in absinthe.
