For
Richer, For Poorer |

"I'll
invite thirty more people," my then-colleague
and bride-to-be calculated, "and
we'll have enough for the down-payment
and a car." Oh, those were
the times - when you could actually make
money from getting hitched. |
 |
The
economic downturn and the ensuing shrinking
gifts have since taken the shine off this
money-maker - even if I'm still receiving
invitations where only the bank account
details are bolded.
Yet, as the
plummeting divorce rates show, being
married makes perfect financial sense
- 1x2 is simply cheaper than 2x1. So put
a ring on it, but do it cheaply. Say,
by eliminating the two biggest wedding
costs: doing away with the party and moving
the ceremony directly into the honeymoon.
The solution? Elope.
Handily, New York has just unveiled its
all new Manhattan Marriage Bureau. There,
they'll put on your iPod tunes for the
I Do's, and all props - including bouquet,
ring and Kleenex - can be purchased in
the gift shop.
