Hidden Depths

Whether it’s peering behind fridge doors or delving beneath Kingsland Road, we love discovering a place to drink that’s tucked away in a well-loved spot. The Breakfast Club, Pelicans & Parrots and Opium have been favourites for a while, but there’s a new batch we’re finding dotted across town for when our ‘usual’ needs mixing up.

Just a hop, skip and jump away from Balls & Company’s Company Below on Greek Street, we’ve been getting to know Bun House’s Tea Room, now our go-to evening Soho spot. While the Cantonese bao served upstairs have been fuelling our lunchtimes, downstairs, the vibe is neon and no-nonsense: cocktails are listed by two paired ingredients (rice wine and aged tangerine, sour plum and liquorice root, century pear and maple) making for an easy, excellent excuse to step out of our comfort zone and find some new favourites.

Across town in Pimlico, A Wong have teamed up with London Food Month, and will be opening their 1930s-styled subterranean bar The Forbidden City every Friday night in June. Head beneath the heat of the streets to find Andrew Wong mixing in Asian hip hop with platters of snack dishes from Chinese provinces and a choice of Shanghai-inspired signature cocktails to sip alongside.

And to finish? XU makes its long-awaited arrival in Chinatown tomorrow, which will see the Bao team stepping it up a gear. On the ground floor we’ll be sampling the new Taiwanese tea bar, offering a rare glimpse into the art of traditional Taiwanese tea ceremonies. Or venture upstairs, away from the hustle of Soho and sample the seasonal, omakase (aka ‘I’ll leave it up to you’) cocktails available only from the bar. We’ve got our sights set on an oolong tea, gin, white miso and apple concoction.

So whether it’s upstairs, underground or through closed doors, we say, there’s so much more than meets the eye.
