Originally set on a Midsummer’s Eve on the estate of a count in Sweden, August Strindberg’s 1889 Miss Julie has had a National Theatre update, re-imagined into 2018 London. Newly single, rich, thirtysomething Julie (Vanessa Kirby) throws a late night party, and through one-to-watch Polly Stenham’s new adaptation, Miss Julie becomes a fiercely relevant play on social division and liberal hypocrisy.
