Kian Samyani

Head chef of Berenjak

In Conversation

After joining JKS and working part time in the kitchen at Gymkhana (whilst he developed the concept for the group’s recent opening Brigadiers), Iranian chef Kian Samyani now heads things up at new Tehran-inspired Soho eatery Berenjak. We spoke to the SW London native about his favourite spots, and what to order when we drop by – doors open 23rd October!

What’s your all-time favourite London restaurant?
My all-time favourite restaurant in London has to be Sabor. It’s a place you can go to any day of the week to get honest, traditional and authentic food in a casual environment. I love counter dining – getting the chance to watch the chefs at work is really interesting.

Where should we go for Iranian food in London?
Patogh in Marylebone is a great hidden gem for anyone wanting great, unfussy Iranian food. It’s really well priced and offers a variety of authentic Persian dishes to feast on.

What should we order at Berenjak?
Everything! Come down with a few friends, grab a selection of mazeh, kabab, khoresht and side dishes, sit at the bar and share it all with a beer or two to wash it all down.

Which chef should we have our eye on?
Tom Spence from double Michelin-starred Kitchen Table is definitely one to watch.

Where do you go to celebrate?
Gordon’s Wine Bar in Villiers Street has a really unique atmosphere with old wooden walls covered in newspaper cuttings as well as an award-winning wine list. It’s a great place to go for a few bottles of wine with a group of friends to wind down.
