Happy festive time! We missed you all. That last lockdown felt a bit like a time warp, no? And what did we learn? That food markets were the stand-in rave (Notting Hill Fish Shop – now JOY), that we now want really expensive tracksuits, and that you can never have enough not-alcohol-but-tastes-like-alcohol kind of spirits around. Also, friends are the best and online workouts are the worst. And like everyone else, we’ve thrown ourselves into the holiday season early. If you can, please help us by donating to Age UK Westminster’s hamper initiative for the elderly – we really want to try to make a difference, and they need our support. Lastly, we hope you liked our launch last week of UJ Select; was great to get it live.

Big love,

Taryn and Team UJ

New hotels to check out

You know where we want to be right now? Anywhere but our flats. But we still have lots on. So what’s a UJ to do? We have two new West End hotels that are calling us to check them out, and one for 2021 to note.

There is going to be nothing classy about our navidad this year. If there’s one thing we want out of lockdown, it’s fun fun fun.

Matt Varona

KOL, the much-hyped Mexican by Santiago Lastra in Marylebone, has a new mezcaleria opening this Saturday, 12 Dec. We caught up with the head of drinks, Matt Varona – who worked with small-scale agave producers in Mexico to carefully curate this list – about some of his favourite places to drink around town and beyond.

UJ: Where in London (apart from Kol) do you think has a good mezcal collection?
MV: Hacha, on Kingsland Road. They curate their mezcal collection really well. It’s interesting and they work hard to highlight the spectrum of agave spirits available out there.

UJ: Best place to drink mezcal in Mexico?
MV: The last cocktail bar I went to in Mexico City was Ticuchi. I took a lot of inspiration from their mezcal list.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Glitter in the grey

You know what we all need? Some live singing and dancing… The West End’s first major musical to reopen, with a hotly anticipated new film adaptation on the way (in February 2021), Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is the award-winning hit musical for today. Based on a true story, it’s up to date and more relevant than ever and it’s been specially updated for the times we live in today. It’s a funny, feel-good, musical sensation that’s ready to be your much-needed glitter in the grey. Sounds good to us; see you in the front row. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is back at the Apollo Theatre from 12 December.

Post Lockdown Hit List

Where we want to go

So, last post-lockdown it seemed like we were craving the classics; this time, it’s a real mixed bag. On our list: Parrillan, Selfridges and The Berkeley to check out their outdoor festive set ups; Behind for their eight-course seafood feast; JOY for a night at Spiritland x Pastaio; KOL to try their new mezcaleria (opening on the 12th); and La Famiglia, cause it turns out we’ve never been.

Annie's Ibiza in Carnaby

Carnaby Street Shuffle

Get over there

We love Carnaby Street, our hood for many years. There’s always a reason – especially over the holidays – to have a wander around, but now, with the launch of Annie’s from Ibiza (who’s brought a serious injection of fun to Newburgh St.), and Choose Love’s Christmas shop (tap to give might just be the win of 2020), the time is now to get ye self down there.

Winter sun

We know, Dec-Jan in Tulum, not that original; NYFW+LFW+IMS by the sea. BUT this year it’s feeling reassuringly ‘happening’. And by that, we mean, events are being advertised, and should be fun! (If you’re in the ‘feeling okay to see people’ camp, that is.) And with the Dec launch of IT in the jungle – the Mayfair/Ibiza/Milan glossy Italian – it’s clear that Tulum is changing. But we say there’s always a way to get away from it all. And Tulum is always a good time!

We recently noticed Barry’s Outside on their schedule (in Cali), which seems to make sense. We’re hoping this movement makes its way over here. Only one issue… Barry’s in the rain? Suit up.

Out and about

Eating out! It’s our favourite thing, and we’re so happy it’s back; we know you are too. Here are three greats we went to before lockdown. Maison François for a chic, West End long lunch, TAKA for unforgettable, innovative Japanese fare, and Tacos Padre for fun under the Borough tracks. Click through to read the reviews. And Tacos Padre is now open again for evenings (Thurs-Sat evenings and Sunday days) until Christmas, so bundle up and get in quick!

All about that hardware

We recently discovered this brand – Kara – out of NYC. Look at this hardware! There’s something chic about the chunky gold messenger style too. Min fuss, max impact. We love these necklaces as well.

It's time

Anyone else feel like it’s well and truly time to get back on the fitness wagon? There’s something about this place that we keep coming back to. Just over the US border (in Tecate, Mexico), the setting looks amazing (hiking), and we love the casita-style rooms you stay in, complete with fires and terracotta terraces.

The best of the bunch

In an attempt to combat words that now make us cringe – at home, delivery, take away, ‘kits’ – we’re focusing on the good. Amazing restaurant cuisine, that comes to your house, and sometimes needs a little cooking done by you. Here are five for you to try.
