We’ve almost made it. Yes, we had some (more) bad news yesterday, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned this year, it’s that we can do it. For those of you who haven’t planned your holiday yet, neither have we, ’tis the año. Think at this point all that matters is that we look out for the people around us, the best we can. Hope everyone gets a festive something in today and let’s all just think positive for 2021…We’re right there with you.

Big love all,

Taryn and Team UJ

Wine Subscriptions

So, I think we can all agree that we’ve consumed a bit of wine this year. And out of that has come some good new wine subscriptions. Here are a few to see you through the holiday season.

Soho

Heartbeat of London

We love Soho – to us, it’s London – and right now, with the festive spirit high and some recent additions, it’s a necessary holiday stop. For food, it’s the new Rita’s (bottle shop now, restaurant to come) on Lexington and Golden Gai (from Angelina in Dalston, same Ital-Japanese everything) on D’Arblay. On Carnaby it’s the Choose Love store (buy a T!), and on Newburgh Street it’s the new Antidote wine shop and Annie’s Ibiza, which is looking very festive.

Festive it up

We’re going into Tier 3, yes. But it’s 10 days until Christmas – and we still have tonight! With that in mind, let’s pack in the festivities (mask-clad, 2 metres apart of course). For something that feels almost like nightlife, head to Spiritland @ JOY at Portobello tonight for Jonny Woo’s Christmas Singalong. For some classics, Handel’s Messiah is on tonight at the RAH (we love!!) and The Connaught has a new hütte serving mulled wine and pretzels. If you haven’t been to the Mercato Mayfair, it’s in St. Mark’s church, which feels very festive, and for some annual holiday bling, it’s a visit to The Churchill for their Griswold-style lights. Lastly, if you haven’t watched a holiday film yet, there’s The Cinema at Selfridges x Brasserie of Light – tonight it’s Elf.

Bags: Inside Out

Pre-book tickets for 2021

Bags: Inside Out looks at the longstanding role bags play in our lives. Divided into three sections, the Function section looks at bags through a practical lens – as objects designed to hold our belongings. We have our eye on the Louis Vuitton trunk on display from the early 1900s. The Status and Identity section looks at the hype, power and association around certain ‘It’ bags, and the final section, Design and Making, looks at the processes around the creation of said bags, from sketch to finished product. The exhibition (sponsored by Mulberry) finishes, suitably, looking towards the future and includes bags made out of environmentally sustainable materials like recycled ocean plastic waste (Stella McCartney) and fire hoses (Elvis & Kresse). This is one not to miss!

These both keep selling out, so by the time we publish this, you’ll likely have to put your name on the waitlist, or maybe look around (we’ve supplied a US site for Stüssy). But they’re great. We want both.

Aguulp for Gut Shots

Healthy gut = happy head

If there’s one thing we want to do this holiday season, it’s get back on track with healthy everything. And Aguulp – the groundbreaking new brand co-founded by Professor Green, that’s offering liquid shots of goodness – looks like a good place to start. With a 98% absorption rate within 4 minutes, a daily dose of Aguulp boosts gut health, brain power and the immune system. And as the gut and the brain are so closely linked, a healthy gut means ‘a happier’ brain, which sounds good to us. The branding is great too – every bit helps! For 25% off the Aguulp for Gut shots until the end of December, please use promo URBANJUNKIES25.

Island Dye

You know what makes a great gift? A bespoke sweat set from Island Dye. Born out of the days of quarantine on Ibiza, Island Dye brings some sunny good vibes, direct from the White Isle. Just choose what garment(s) you want (sweatshirt, joggers, the set), select the size and buy, and then we’ll be in touch to ask what colours and pattern you’d like (classic tie dye, heart, intergalactic, etc). And voilà! A custom piece/set, from Maria, founder of Island Dye. We own some ourselves, and absolutely love them.

Cornwall

This is one year that feels like it needs to be seen out somewhere peaceful. Sea views, fresh air: that’s what we’re after. And both Idle Rocks and The Watergate Bay (at time of press) had availability, with three-night minimums. Hop to it.

More interesting than avo on toast

Well, the word brunch might still feel like a four letter word, but there are now some really interesting ones. From glam gumbo to croissant-waffle mixes and breakfast bruschetta, it’s a good time to brunch.

Where to go this holiday

So, as we said, no plans, no problem! We know this isn’t the year to travel… but. If you want to get away, there are some places where you don’t have to quarantine and flights right now across the board seem reasonable. We have our eyes on the Caribbean – this small ‘resort’ on the private island of Petít St. Vincent looks pretty great. They may not have space over actual Christmas, but they have room both before and after and as there are only 22 cottages spread across the entire island, there can only be a max of 44 guests at any time, with two acres of land each. Luxe.

Canned Cocktails

The best of RTDs

It’s raining canned cocktails! Overnight, there are so many of them. This is our pick of the best. From Oliver Peyton’s Unknown Pleasures (we’ll have the Bloody Mary can please) and Empirical Spirits (for the colour of the cans alone) to Hawksmoor’s delicious-sounding Back Burner (tequila, mezcal, jalapeño, pineapple soda) and East London’s on-trend seltzers, these certainly take the hassle out of cocktail making.

Self Knowledge

Well, it can’t hurt to try to end 2020 with a little introspection. Especially if this year has caused you anxiety of any sort (that will be all of us then). We’ve heard this book from The School of Life is worth a read. Here’s to 2021!
