Restaurants & Bars: Restaurant Reviews

Kudu Marylebone

South London fave arrives in W1

Details

More info

We knew this South African-inspired restaurant would be good – there isn’t anyone we know who has reported back with less than stellar reviews – but what we weren’t expecting was for it to feel so grown up, in a good way. We liked it here, a lot!

The Décor/Vibe

Glossy spotlighting on the counter makes an atmospheric centrepiece in this buzzy dining room; for a Friday lunch, this is exactly where you want to be. This is a large space – there are a few different rooms, but you’d never know it unless you take a wander around. The main dining room is centred around an open kitchen, and the warm tones throughout are a nod to the landscape of South Africa.

The Food and Drink

Start with their namesake bread, which has a pillowy texture and is meant to be dunked in melted butters with extra ingredients like house-cured bacon and shrimp. Then, move on to small plates that have been done on the open-fire braai, like grilled tiger prawns with peri peri, and scorched mackerel with kohlrabi and apple. Finally, move onto share plates like whole black bream and dry-aged T-bone. Everything is extremely flavourful, combinations are innovative and delicious, and everything tastes very fresh.

Highlights

We loved the bar dining here and will be back for the dessert menu, which includes rum and roasted raisin soft serve; a Kudu ‘Kit Kat’ with burnt marshmallow, and a pineapple-cardamom brûlée for three, which sounds like a Friday treat, indeed.
