Vibe & Decor

If you visited Kricket Brixton when it was in this spot, you already know the deal. Smoke & Salt is housed within a shipping container in Pop Brixton, ergo it is SMALL. There’s a row of bar seats along one side, and a few (four at a push) tables on the other side. It’s cramped, sure, but it’s intimate and buzzy, too.

Flavours

The dishes here are based on ancient cooking principles like smoking, preserving and curing, which might sound gimmicky on paper, but in practice, it really works. There are only 11 dishes on the concise menu, so you could order all between three of you, or the majority of it between two. We kicked things off with a Boston Sour, flavoured with fresh sorrel (and so good we had to order another one straight away) and then opted for six plates: tomatoes with ricotta, trombetta courgettes, lamb merguez tartare, trout, hispi cabbage and boneless chicken leg.

Highlight

The tomatoes with smoked ricotta. Umami goodness.

Top tip

Arrive early or book in advance – this place is tiny, and popular.
