Chateau Denmark

Rock and roll rooms on a historic street

Details

More info

Denmark Street has always been special. Tucked away off Tottenham Court Road, it feels like its own little village, with a definite rock and roll pulse. Chateau Denmark is a collection of hotels and apartments, set across 16 buildings. Walk into any one of them, and instantly feel like you’re part of the neighbourhood.

The Hotel

This is not a traditional layout. Check in at the base of The Now Building in the Outernet development, next to the restaurant Tattu’s ground-floor reception, and, if you’re staying in an apartment, go back to Denmark Street to find your Soho front door. Breakfast is in the bar, and we doubt they have a gym – it’s not that kind of place! More likely, they hope you’re smoking in the halls (joking, but it kind of smells like that; that might be their ‘scent’ though) and waking up past noon instead. Maybe after throwing a TV out the window after one too many stiff drinks.

The Rooms

No matter what room you have here, you feel like you’re right in the heart of it. If you’re staying in an apartment, look out your window and see creative office workers staring back at you, or leave your windows open and hear a band rehearsing across the street. This is authentic Soho at its core.

The décor varies across the property, but every room has been carefully considered; rooms in The Now Building are classic, with bold accents (colours, patterns, features). And in the apartments, which are located in Grade II listed buildings, designs include a gothic style, which is carried across robes, slippers, lighting, additional décor elements; some truly beg you to party with a full bar (complete with ice machine and good glassware) and serious soundsystem. There’s definitely a combined feeling of Dracula’s den + Harry Potter + Addam’s Family, with a hint of Manhattan townhouse. Kind of like an adult’s theme park stay.

Restaurants/Bars

There’s an award-winning bar, Thirteen, here, that feels very ‘90s Soho, and that’s not a bad thing: sometimes it’s just the nostalgia needed. They also serve light dishes like sushi rolls and mini Asian tacos and have some outdoor seating.

Highlights

The soundsystems in rooms (that are also seemingly brilliantly soundproof). This feels like the type of place where in the early 2000s,  you might have had a night that started at Groucho, went on to Trisha’s/Gerry’s, and then invited your new friends back here to carry on. And woken up after a long blink with a very expensive minibar bill. It’s good to know that places like this still exist. You get the feeling that the walls may have been hosed down once or twice before. KEEP YOUR GRANOLA!

Anything Else

Denmark Street makes you want to buy an electric guitar. Even if it’s just to have. You can find one in any colour of the rainbow, and this really feels like a street where everyone knows your name.
