FRIDAY FEBRUARY 6, 2009 |
It's
Live |
 |
 |
 |
This
being the country that translates Sound
of Music as "Sonrisas y lágrimas"
(Smiles & Tears) and Home Alone
as "Mi pobre angelito"
(My Little Angel), it makes perfect sense
that they'd keep the Saturday
Night Live name, to then only air
its Spanish version on a Thursday. And
watching the premiere yesterday, I was
quite thankful it hadn't been a
weekend night laid to waste. |
 |
That's
said with some regret, though, as I'm
a big fan of the original show and we
could use some snarky, intelligent comedy
amidst all the meaningless roundtable
chit-chat, personal confessions and dire
talk shows that clutter Spanish programming.
Poor execution and a Thursday scheduling,
however, doesn't mean that you'll
have to forego live quality entertainment
Saturday night. The spot that was once
home to speakeasy bar and performance
space, Abaixadors Deu, has been revived
as lugAr.
It's all dolled up now and turned into
a member's club but, in a similar vein
to Mau Mau Lounge, the fee is modest (EUR
5-15) and drinks are dirt cheap once inside.
And dedicated to emerging arts, there
are regular workshops and live performances
on weekends. So rather than channel Cuatro,
let it be 'Live from El Born!'.
