Weekend Guide

Is anyone else hungry all the time at the moment? Maybe it’s the constant temptation of a fridge full of Häagen-Dazs, but we’re in a foodie mood this week, and there’s plenty of events this weekend to keep us satisfied. We’ll be taking notes at the luxury Quintessentially Epicure food demos (and making the most of the 20% off ticket offer), squeezing in another champagne brunch at Aqua before the end of the month, and swapping our market bought meat and veg for a sit-down meal at Ridley’s. It’s OK, we’ll burn it all off hitting the shops for pre-fashion week events, raving it up at XOYO and Buzzin’ Fly’s party, and dancing around the office to Michaelangelo L’Acqua’s Sun Burn Mixtape, which you can download below. Enjoy!

FASHION ROUNDUP
Carnaby Street catwalk

You might have already heard us mentioning Fashion’s Night Out – check our Facebook page for updates – but there’s a few fash-happenings after today's fun in the lead up to fashion week. Firstly, Art Meets Fashion (think Duchamp-inspired dresses) is putting on a pop-up and window display in St Martin’s Lane from today for one month, which should be Pop Art-tastic. Secondly, the London College of Fashion’s own pop-up will be the place to find cutting-edge clothes, with designs from alumni including William Tempest and Ada Zanditon will be open from tomorrow. And thirdly, there’s the Carnaby Street Catwalk happening in our ‘hood, with catwalk shows on Saturday afternoon alongside live music, in-store stylists and pop-up nail bars.

AGENDA PICK
Chanel pops up at Harrods

Pop-ups are here, there, and everywhere. So it was only a matter of time before the big kids joined in on the fun. Chanel pop-up Une Promenade is taking over Harrods in a frenzy of fantastical allure. Pamper yourself at the beauty bar, shop the Chanelified version of the Harrods shopper and visit the exhibition that is Lagerfeld’s Shangri La – expect a tweed-lined room, a walk-in 2.55 bag and the Versailles Garden set from the S/S catwalk. Hats off to you, Lagerfeld.

PODCAST
Michaelangelo L'Acqua - Sun Burn 11 Mixtape

When we were recently given this MP3 on a W Hotels Burn Studios’ DJ Lab programme press trip, the mix really hit the spot. So much so, that we are now going to be hosting podcasts from the man responsible for this one, Michelangelo L’Acqua. Michaelangelo has a bit of a music background – he started his career as Tom Ford Music Director for Gucci and YSL in ‘99, then went on to produce music for runway shows, DJs around the world, and now is currently the Global Music Director for W Hotels and has his own record label ‘Gyoza’ coming out in 2012. That's quite a CV! This man knows style and beats and we welcome him to the UJ fold. Enjoy the mix!

FOOD: Ridley’s Pop-up
Swapping market produce for lunch seems like a novel idea, and it’s one that design collective The Decorators have launched for September. Transforming a derelict part of Dalston’s Ridley Road market, a two-storey building will be erected for exhibitionist diners. You can swap market food for lunch, or settle down upstairs for dinner made by a line-up of chefs and sent up to you by a mechanical table. Forward-thinking dining this certainly is. Email here to reserve for dinner – limited to 2 places per person.

Time: 11am – 11pm Weds – Sat. Lunch is at 1-2pm and Dinner at 7.30-11pm
Place: Ridley’s, Ridley Road (corner of Colvestone Crescent and Birbeck Road), E8 2NP
Cost: Dinner £15 (includes dinner and a £5 food voucher for the market)
Info: Ridley’s Pop-up

CLUB: Bestival Alternative Party
We have festival fatigue anyway, so we’re not shedding too many tears over being in London over Bestival weekend, but just in case you were, XOYO’s ready to cheer you up. Electro-flavoured DJ sets from Solo, Zombie Disco Squad's Nat Self and the Snap, Crackle and Pop team should keep you distracted, and with the tiny door price we can make it just one stop on an all-night bar-hopping tour.

Time: 10pm-3am
Place: XOYO, 32-37 Cowper Street,
EC2A 4AP
Cost: £1
Info: Bestival Alternative Party

BOOK NOW
Roi des Belges hotel

It’s all part of the cultural run-up to the Olympics: a one-bedroom hotel in the form of a marooned ship (inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, apparently) that is being hoisted on top of the Southbank Centre. Sounds as unique a place to wake up as any we can think of. Artists and writers will be staying, but there are spots available for the public, which go on sale today and will be gone in a flash.

From £120 a night

FOOD: Menu change at Yauatcha
Remember back in 2004, when Yauatcha appeared on Broadwick Street like a sleek spacecraft, offering the then-novel delight of high-class dim sum? After scoring a Michelin star it’s been happily in business ever since, and now they’ve added a swish new bar and updated the menu with twenty-eight new dishes. Favourites such as venison puffs have been joined by offerings such as lobster dumplings with tobika caviar, all so delicate and painstakingly constructed that it seemed a crime to eat them. (We managed.)

Time: Mon-Sat 12pm-11:45pm, Sun 12pm-10:30pm
Place: Yauatcha, 15 Broadwick Street,W1F 0DL
Cost: Various costs
