Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

You might not want to leave your duvet this weekend (-1°C according to our resident weather advisor!) but we’ll try to tempt you from the depths of cosiness with our veritable smorgasbord of events. Dine in style at Nine French Place or new foodie find Brixton Village, then chill out at Curzon Soho and listen to some 60s Americana at Borderline. If you’re still shivering, grab your Lomo camera and escape to Salvador for sun, sea and seriously good parties.

ART: Ben Wilson’s Chewing Gum Art
Getting gum stuck to your fancy footwear is never a good start to the day, so we’re loving Ben Wilson’s ingenious miniature paintings that cover the little blighters. From intricate street scenes to marriage proposals, Ben’s mini masterpieces pepper the pavements with flashes of colour. A trail of gum paintings can currently be found stuck to the streets between East India DLR and Trinity Buoy Wharf, which leads to a photographic exhibition of Wilson's work at The Boiler House.

Time: 12-5pm
Place: The Boiler House, Trinity Buoy Wharf, E14 0JW
Cost: Free

EAT: Nine French Place
Local lads Daniel Morgan and Magnus Reid have decided to give some love back to their Shoreditch home with a five-course banquet held in a converted warehouse. Reid has worked his way round the area’s cool cafes and bars (Hackney Pearl, Dalston Superstore, A Little Of What You Fancy) while Morgan has done stints at Maze, The Square and has even cooked for the Queen. Together they have created an intriguing menu including Anatomical Pig, Compressed Apple, Pork Quaver and Crispy Shrimp – could be code for a good pork roast but we’ll give it a go.

Time: 7pm
Place: 9 French Place, E1 6JB
Cost: £50

INTERNATIONAL
Switch Rio for Salvador

Trade in Rio Carnival this year for the wilder parties of Salvador (yes, it’s possible). While Rio’s all about the floats and the feathers, Salvador’s offerings concentrate on beachside blocos and music. After the party circuit, rent a private beachside villa at Uxua Casa Hotel in Trancoso (a hop, skip and 50 minute flight away) for a complete rest-up.

Uxua Casa Hotel, Bahia, Brazil. Double rooms from £457 (excluding tax and service)

FILM: Martha Marcy May Marlene
The title may be a mouthful but trust us, this film is worth the embarrassment when you stutter the name booking tickets. It’s already picked up an award at Sundance with one of the Olsen clan bravely entering the indie film world with an amazing performance as a young girl trapped in a cult. To celebrate Sean Durkin’s directorial debut, Curzon Soho has transformed its bar into a scene from the sinister rural community – think log cabin walls, gas lamps, rakes and spades… oh and a bit of paisley.

Time: Times vary
Place: Curzon Soho, 99 Shaftesbury Avenue, W1D 5DY
Cost: £12.50

MUSIC: Hanni El Khatib at Borderline
UJ’s pick from HMV’s Next Big Thing line up has to be West Coast charmer Hanni El Khatib. The ex-pro skater-turned-fashion director received his gold star of approval last year when he toured with Florence + the Machine. Not convinced? His 60s Americana-influenced sound with a healthy dose of punk, doo-wop and blues will have you instantly hooked and California dreamin’.

Time: 7pm
Place: Borderline, Orange Yard (off Manette Street),
W1D 4JB
Cost: From £10

We already sneak off to Brixton for a foodie fix at the ever-evolving Brixton Village (Honest, Seven and KoaSarn being just a few of our faves) but now we’ll practically be living there with the opening of Boqueria, a contemporary tapas joint on Acre Lane. The obligatory leg of jamón sits on the bar but be a bit more adventurous and go for griddled eggs with mushrooms & langoustines, or suckling pig with parsnip & sweet potato crisps. Oh and the almond tart – got to try the almond tart.
