Amongst the hungry and healthy working masses of Oxford Circus, Atariya sushi bar is something of a lunchtime legend. Located right next to Selfridges on James Street, this take away only sushi pit-stop serves incredibly fresh nigiri and maki, all made to order. Ideal for when all that shopping tires you out. Although a little further out, it’s worth checking out their sit down restaurants too – Café Japan in Golders Green is another UJ fave.

First things first: if you want to go to Dotori, book in advance. Like, way in advance. It’s tiny and very popular, so walk-ins or booking a few days in advance are a no-go here. It’s more fusion than sushi, as they serve both Japanese and Korean food, but the sushi (and the prices) are exceptional. Plus, it’s right next to Rowan’s (UJ’s fave spot for some good old-fashioned fun) so you can go bowling after to work it off.

Like most of the places on this list, Sushi Masa is totally inconspicuous, almost always busy, and you largely need to book in advance. It used to be known as Sushi-Say, a family affair which attracted customers all four corners of the city. After a name and management change, it’s still serving up incredible tempura, gyoza, and made-to-order sushi, with lashings of sake.

If you’re central and need a sushi fix, head for Sushi Atelier on Great Portland Street. From the team behind Chisou, they specialise in contemporary versions of traditional sushi. Start with a razor clam ceviche, and then opt for one of the reasonable Omakase tasting menus, where the chef picks the freshest sushi and sashimi for you. #UJLoves.

Slick Hackney-based Japanese restaurant Uchi has a concise, reasonably priced menu, consisting of sushi, robata specials, tempura and kara-age. The drinks follow suit, too: their small, curated selection of whisky, sake, and umeshu provides the perfect accompanying tipple. Make sure you leave room for the yuzu cheesecake.
