Top 5: Counter Dining Spots

Pull up a seat

  • The Palomar

Without even talking about the food, The Palomar ticks most of the boxes: great tunes, reservations and walk-ins, friendly staff, up-tempo vibes, and they’ve even crept in a pink neon sign (#UJLoves). Flavour wise, from the raw bar to the creative Levantine menu and fresh and boozy spritzers, it nails it.

  • The Ivy

Here, it’s all class. The Ivy may have had a multi-million pound facelift but the iconic spot has retained its old school values. White linen, glamour, suits and quiet chatter. We say get a plush stool at the new glistening bar for luxe bar dining. And for those looking for late-ish meal, this is THE after-theatre spot, not only for location but the atmosphere kicks up a notch. Although it may not be about the food here (if the walls could talk…), the menu is good. The classics such as the Bang Bang chicken, peanuts and chilli, the Shepherd’s pie and The Ivy hamburger have survived the facelift, but the menu also includes some new fresh contemporary flavours, such as the tea smoked short ribs and Thai baked sea bass wrapped in a banana leaf.

  • Barrafina Adelaide Street

As with the original in Soho, come here for traditional and contemporary tapas, plus some new Adelaide Street additions. From the frituras and chargrilled dishes (oyster ceviche and Iberican pork ribs), a private dining space downstairs, and its very own plancha, there are some differences, but just as with Frith Street there are no reservations so expect the same queues.

  • Dean Street Townhouse

Even 8am meetings on a weekday are fun at DST. An outpost of Soho House (but open to the public) the restaurant and bar may have white linen and cloth napkins, but it’s cosy spot. If you can’t nab a spot by the bar (UJ loves) head to the other room that is all rugs, velvet chairs and cushions and make your way through their seasonal British menu.

  • Electric Diner

Aside from Electric Diner’s easy, no-fuss menu of diner classics: shaved rib of beef sandwiches, hot dogs, double cheeseburgers…you get the picture, we can’t get enough of it’s casual and comfy vibe. Soft leather booths, fun tracks from the reel machine and refillable coffee – this is always our go-to spot.
