Top 5: Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Where to satisfy your cheese craving

  • The Melt Room

Why has it taken so long for London’s first grilled cheese sandwich shop to open? The Melt Room, has (finally!) brought the first New York-style cheese-stuffed hot sandwich dedicated shop to London’s Soho. Traditionalist should order the classic cheese on sourdough with onions. Or, go gourmet from the several other options: think lamb shoulder, pastrami, tuna bean or roasted beetroot (to name a few). Try a Nutella and Mascarpone melt for dessert, naturally!

  • Grill My Cheese

The don of the gourmet toasties, Grill My Cheese do combos which range from the classic with bechamel sauce to the more adventurist melts such as the Indian spiced potato grilled cheese sandwiches, peanut butter, bacon with with chilli jam and, of course, their signature mac ‘n’ cheese melt (Baby Got Mac). They are currently found, Monday-Friday, on Leather Lane (Clerkenwell side).

  • Sager + Wilde Hackney Road

We have a lot of love for Sager + Wilde – mostly for introducing to the most unlikely combo: grilled toasties with fine wine. And it works. Pop into the cosy bar, order a bottle of plonk, with a toastie to go with. The classic melt always goes down a treat, but who can really go past the melted cheese with pesto?

  • Deeney’s

For a toastie with highland flavour try Deeney’s. A mix of classic toastie combinations, with all the things Scottish, like regional meats, hearty broths and spicy haggis. Parked at St Kathrine Docks on Friday, Broadway Market on Saturday and Chatworth Road on Sunday, we suggest getting there before the lunchtime rush.

  • The Cheese Truck

Plain and simple grilled British cheese sandwiches is the concept- and it works. Although the grilled cheese is worth the wait in the line (so to is the goats cheese melt), we suggest ordering a side of fondue gooey cheese fries as well. This truck can be found at Maltby Street every Saturday.
