Weekend Guide

It's Hallowe'en next week. Then it's Guy Fawkes, Christmas, New Year's, and hey presto! before you know it we've seen Valentine's Day and it's already the end of Summer 2009. A cheery thought I know. Which means you'd better muster your strength this weekend, 'cause it's all downhill from here...

Bog standard pubs, clubs, and theme nights still not doing it for you? Well that's handy, since this weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Absolut. So, if you're in need of some inspiration for a totally decadent night out in the city, UJ have teamed up with glamorous vodka label to create a little black book of delights. Because in an Absolut world, any night is a Masquerade.

TalkPoetry International
Poetry has never been my strong point. All opportunities to express myself with eloquence have so far resulted in monosyllabic dross and bodged metaphors akin to Swayze's "She's like the Wind." Avoid my failings, and head to the Southbank and listen to true wordsmiths John Berger, David Constantine and Rema Hammami in conversation, whilst taking in a bit of live music and performance. It's going to be cooler than school, that's for sure.

Time:
Various
Place:
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XT
Cost:
£8.50

Picasso must be dying to get some of that action.

Sky+ Boxes
Sky+ Boxes are the new partners. They tape what you like, do what you tell them, and you can fast forward through the tedious bits. Nice. And now the latest designer collabs are in, they look good too. If it weren't for Peaches Geldof's frankly horrifying MTV show last night, we'd go for the PPQ one. But as she's planning a capsule collection with them, we're plumping for Erdem's flowers. Or Julie Verhoeven's collage. Or Henry's tartan. Is there such a thing as technological polygamy?

SUNDAY

MusicNational Apple Day
If an apple a day really does keep the doctor away, the NHS will be in short supply this Sunday as apple mania takes over our favourite foodie fair. Expect apple pies, apple cakes and all kinds of autumnal treats as stallholders celebrate this naughty little pomaceous fruit (Adam & Eve and Snow White didn't fare so well, did they?) Just stay away from any scary old women with baskets.

Time:
11am-5pm
Place:
8 Southwark St, SE1 1TL
Cost:
Free
Info:

musicLes Chanson De Piaf
If you can't think of legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf without thinking of Specsavers (thanks to their bastardized ads) then get ye down to an evening sure to put the real pathos and passion back into the performance. Encompassing all of her greatest hits and lesser known works via accordion, guitar, and Lorraine Brunning's stirring vocals, if you find yourself regretting after this, you're short-sighted indeed.

Time:
6pm
Place:
Quecumbar, 42-44 Battersea High St, SW11 3HX
Cost:
£15

djBloggers Delight
Aren't you good? All that culture, cuisine, art, music, poetry and film this weekend. Any other and you'd be near broken by now after a string of hefty late-nighters. Okay, so we take a little bit of responsibility for that. But still. Congrats. What you need is a reward. Riva Starr, The Photonz, Casper C and Skull Juice, all crammed into the Lock Tavern for eight hours of fun? That should do the trick.

Time:
3-11pm
Place:
The Lock tavern, 35 Chalk Farm Rd, NW1 8AJ
Cost:
Free

LISTEN

Mezzanine De L'Alcazar
Ah, tunes to dine to, schmooze to, sup to, lounge to. Since those heady evenings with St Germain playing out, back in the day, we don't think you can ever have enough quality compilations for dinner parties. And Mezzanine De L'Alcazar, the new 10th anniversary comp from the chaps at Defected Records, has really been tickling our audio fancies here at UJHQ all week… and it's out now. Or you could always tell us why you deserve one of our five prize copies to win one free.

EAT & DRINK

Inamo
Maybe it was the fact that I'd just been to a preview screening of Quantum of Solace, which was actually a lot better than I expected it to be, or that I only seemed to be able to order a large flask of sake to myself but I haven't had as much fun in a restaurant as I had at Inamo for a long time.

It's really all about the interactive table-tops in this Wardour Street newcomer, which are distinctly Bond-like in that they operate like individual hi-tech ordering systems. You click your 'mouse' to bring up the menu and click on your choices to order. You can also change the design of your table, see into the kitchen or play games - so after half a flask of sake there was no end to the merriment!

Then the food arrived and, joy of joys, it was really good. Sashimi salad had a lovely citrussy dressing, fall-apart Chilean sea bass was nicely truffled and crunchy green vegetables were dressed in a fragrant peanut sauce - and all of it fairly reasonably priced, apart from my sake.

There's even a sexy little basement bar downstairs and if you find yourself having too much fun you can even summon a taxi at the click of your mouse.
