AN' DAZ THE WAY WE DO IT

So how’s January going thus far then? A bit nippy? Un peu impoverished? So you’d be forgiven for thinking that now would be an odd time for international hotel expansionism (what with the eco and fiscally driven decline in travel and all). Yet there’s something of a trend for certain hotel groups powering on through this period of penny pinching.

At the mammoth end, there’s the frankly insane 68-acre, $11billion Mandarin-led City Center that is the new face of Las Vegas – think chintzless and neon-free with greater comparative subtlety (stress on the "comparative", mind, this still being Vegas after all) – which opened just pre-Christmas. Back here in the Big Smoke, meanwhile, bets are on to see quite what W are going to drop with their hefty offering on the quiet cul-de-sac that is Lie-Sess-Ter Square this summer.

Downsizing on scale, it’s warming to know that some of our finest British exports are driving this hotel trend across the pond. Following in the footsteps of such UK luminaries as, erm, Cat Deeley, New Yoik’s Crosby Street Hotel (the latest boutique offering from our very own Firmdale group) is claiming quite a following. And now the new Andaz (once the humble, forward-thinking Great Eastern Hotel, and later award-winning, Hyatt-owned boutique) is out to tick every box it can find.

Svelt yet cosy design? Check. Copious chandeliers? Check. Location? How's bang on Wall Street for ya? Respectable in-house bar? Check – if you make it past the promised 'create-your-own' room service option. Oh, and did we mention affordable? That's a big ten-four to that one too, good buddy.

As though New York sales, the Tim Burton exhibition at the MOMA and NY Restaurant Week weren’t reasons enough to lull you off on a last-minute transatlantic soujourn so early in the year. Yeah, that's right: we know your sort…

Andaz Wall Street is taking bookings now and opens Jan 18.

DOGGY STYLE

There’s something deeply unsexy about having your legs strung up in the air “Cirque du Soleil” style. But in the interests of journalistic integrity (and our flailing ‘New Year, New You’ resolutions) Urban Junkies have undertaken the ultimate mystery in exercise (is it yoga, is it acrobatics, is it all hype?) – Pilates. Join UJ as we uncover the providence of Gwyneth Paltrow, yummy mummies and our very own, barking, Sir Lancealot. We’re in love. And after your first free session, courtesy of UJ, you will be too.
