Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

Pop-up supper clubs, Malay street food and Turkish Tom Dixon-style are on the UJ menu this weekend. Of course, it is Guy Fawkes so just make sure you tuck in before heading out. Or if you’d rather take cover, do so from the heady heights of the Paramount members’ club where you can let loose and rock your moustache (it is Movember after all, guys) with the Superfreqs or let Patrick Wolf and CocknBullKid get you all fired up with their bound-to-dazzle live shows. Failing that indulge in a little cashmere heaven at the Pringle sample sale or nurture your inner cinemaste with a trip to see the heady Weekend at the Ritzy.

FRIDAY
UJ UJ

MUSIC: Patrick Wolf and CocknBullKid
Avant-garde, red-haired beau Patrick Wolf is accompanied by Hackney pop-princess CocknBullKid at the Roundhouse this Friday for what’s set to be as much a visual treat as an aural one. This is one for the romantics – you can expect passionate, starry-eyed electro-folk-tronica (how else can we describe his genre?) from Wolf’s latest euphoric album, Lupercalia, while CocknBullKid’s cutesy getups and 80's Madonna influences mean an upbeat and colourful performance in store. It’s not all doom and gloom.

Time: Doors open 7pm
Place: The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH
Cost: £17.50
Info: Patrick Wolf and

FOOD: Tastes of Istanbul
You know the drill: Tom Dixon designed this warehouse-cum-eatery complete with Sunday market which overlooks the Portobello Docks and promises a locally-sourced, experimental menu and a cocktail list to match – the cosy downstairs bar is perfect for winter eves. Their Tastes of Istanbul menu ends this weekend so head here to sample a slice of Mediterranean (it’s going to be good – they sent their chefs to Istanbul for research). Tahini ice cream anyone?

Time: Mon-Sat 12-2:30pm and 7-9.30pm, Sun 12-5.30pm
Place: Portobello Dock, 342 Ladbroke Grove (entrance off Kensal Road), W10 5AH

Anyway, this weekend’s line-up brings you Mr.C himself and sets from Ewan Pearson and residents Raymundo Rodriguez and Luke vB. Party on up, ahem.

PODCAST
Work it mix! By Audio Sushi

Yes, we know, it’s less than two months to Christmas and if the Oxford Street lights switch-on wasn’t enough to remind us, then the never-ending flyering of gym discounts and Bikram yoga sessions certainly do. It seems like everybody’s upping the fitness ante, whether they’re training for marathons or enrolling at a new pilates class, so if you feel like you’re lagging we hope this UJ pumped-up mix will give you a little energetic inspiration in the lead up to the New Year. If it doesn’t, then Richard Simmons' getup might.

CELEBRATE
Kash Point’s Pr’Osthétic C’Osmétic

Calling all past and present club kids: this Sunday sees experimental club Kash Point celebrate its 9th birthday in a frenzy of plumped-up lips, boob jobs gone wrong – the theme is cosmetic surgery – and musical ‘implants’ from the likes of Bishi and Winnie the Poof. This is perhaps more a room full of art installations than a disco – costumes go above and beyond so make sure yours is good enough or you’ll be refused entry. Ehhveryone’s going to be there – king miscreant Matthew Glamorre said it so himself.

Guest list only – to add your name click here...

FOOD: Malay Street Food
Combine London’s on-going love affair with pop-up restaurants and street food carts and what do you get? If you’re at the Sanderson, a street-food pop-up menu brought to you by the ironically stylish hotel’s modern Malaysian restaurant Suka. The lunch and dinner menus (at pretty reasonable prices for such a classy establishment) will whisk you through the culinary delights of street food capitals Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Tawau with typical dishes (served sharing style, of course) including Laska Johor (crab claw noodles, coconut milk, bean sprouts, long beans) and Ikan Bakar (sea bass fillet baked in banana leaf and garnished with papaya salad.)

Sun 5:30-10:30pm

FILM: Weekend
What starts out as a one-night stand on a Friday night turns into an high-octane emotional rollercoaster through bars, bedrooms, booze and drugs all against the back-drop of a housed-up John Carpenter-esque soundtrack. Andrew Haigh’s second feature film took SXSW 2011 by storm and its cast has racked up acclaim. Intimate, powerful, raw… you get the picture. Treat yourself and go see it at London’s cinemaste mecca the Ritzy in Brixton.

Time 12.40pm, 3pm
Place: Ritzy Picturehouse, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, SW2 1JG
Cost: £7.50 for an adult ticket

UJ MEETS HESTON
American Express International Access Program

UJ talks to Heston about his new book, trends, restaurants and what’s to come…

Muscling into The Fat Duck is famed for being a pain. And some of our team still hasn’t actually managed to make it down to Dinner, yet, so…

When we were invited to attend a private dinner, in Banqueting House, Undercroft courtesy of American Express, it was forks at the ready. This was a royal treat. The background of Banqueting House set the scene for a memorable, historic feast. Menu highlights included the classic Heston meat fruit, as well as afternoon fish tea and the dark chocolate (sweet, sour, salt, bitter) BFG dessert, complete with black forest atomizing spray. But the real highlight was meeting the inspirational man himself.
