…holidays! So much going on, hope you get a chance for a quiet festive drink at the bar, somewhere extravagant like Claridge’s. Looking ahead, there are three plays that have caught our eye: 4000 Miles with Timothée Chalamet (April), To Kill a Mockingbird with Rhys Ifans (May), and one to catch before the holidays, Cyrano de Bergerac with James McAvoy (on until 20 Feb). In other news, the new Bancone will be open 14 Dec – we have an interview with its founder Will below. And lastly, this holiday we’re all thinking about how to do more and waste less – if you’re looking to get involved somewhere still as a volunteer, check out this site. Whatever you do this break, have a great one and see you in 2020.

Americana

Red white and blue

With the flurry of late October events that is now Halloween, and the more-than-ever number of Thanksgiving lunches and dinners this year, one thing seems clear: Trump aside, we’re going for a bit of Americana.

Pared back and also a lot

When it comes to French fashion, no one does pared back better. But French hospitality? When dining at the recently opened Mama London, we couldn’t help but think how different their leading groups do F&B. Take Mama Shelter – BOLD! BRIGHT! And Big Mamma Group – ENERGETIC! FUN! MISH-MASHED! Now that we’ve seen what they do with hotels and restaurants, we’re eagerly awaiting more news on the Big Mamma Group’s supposed market… likely to be the most fun of the new-skool food courts. Stay tuned.

More of what’s on our radar

Will Ellner

Founder, Bancone

So out of all the ‘hot’ pasta spots around right now, it has to be said that we at UJ are (currently) team Bancone. Will Ellner, founder of Bancone – which is about to open a new venue on Golden Square in Soho, complete with approx 90 seats for ‘banconi’ (counter) diners – took the time to speak to us about some of his hospitality faves.

For restaurants I like: for upmarket, it’s Gymkhana and for a casual one, it’s Llewellyn’s.

To celebrate… I head to J Sheekey or Chez Bruce.

When I travel, for restaurants… I usually find the tucked away little places – I tend to go rustic rather than flashy.

Pasta Evangelists

Gourmet pasta sent to you at a nice price

We love pasta. But pasta at home is never quite the same as going out. It’s finding the time to get all the fresh ingredients where we always trip up. Pasta Evangelists deliver pasta boxes to your door, taking the hassle out of prep. Go online to choose what pasta you’d like (lobster and crab tortelloni please, or maybe the pumpkin lasagna) and the number of servings, select your delivery day (next day is possible) and check out; simple. You’ll then receive a box through the mail slot with pasta, sauce and instructions – all you need is boiling water to prepare. Try your first box for 50% off, and impress your guests this holiday. Consider it our gift to you, ho ho ho.

Wining and dining

So, we’ve been to some greats lately. For a lobster brunch, we checked out Kym’s; for a long Friday lunch, Soho’s new Danish/Japanese designed Sticks‘n’Sushi; for a quick early bite, the new Chucs Belgravia by Victoria (click through on each name to read more). Now onto the ones we want to get into – Le Comptoir Robuchon, Paradise in Soho, Cafe Murano in Bermondsey, Manteca on Great Marlborough Street – and we still haven’t made it into Emile yet (soon!).

Ski Chic

Slope ready

We’ve been very impressed with skiwear this year. After a recent trip to the beautiful new Fusalp boutique on Draycott Ave, we loved the eveningwear (see the velvet tuxedo trousers in the middle) that’s actually meant for the slopes. So chic! They certainly know what they’re doing over there – the fabrics and tech bits are some of the best we’ve seen. We also love the Versace-esque North Face fleece (if you’re going to wear fleece…) and the Sacai men’s puffer for aprés. Also, not shown here, Balmain is doing houndstooth for the slopes, which would be fun.

Destination 2020

Where we want to go right now

Ah, holidays. They’re all we can think about right now really. Travel. Places on our radar this year include the spa at Two Bunch Palms, which is the hippy hotel in Palm Springs with Lewis/Suits-esque mud baths; The Fife Arms, Iwan and Manuela Wirth’s (of Hauser & Wirth) historic, contemporary art-clad hotel in Cairngorms National Park (and to get there, we’d like to take the Belmond Royal Scotsman please); Amangiri – I mean, who hasn’t wanted to go here before (but we need to rob a bank first); and for some sun, we’ll take Havana please (don’t care where we stay, just give us salsa), Mexico City for dinner at Contramar, and some kind of hike – likely the Camino from Portugal. Happy dreaming!

W10

Detox Retox

All about balance

At this time of year – especially – we try to keep the detox retox in check. So on that note, we’ve brought you our most recent finds on the health and wellness front. First up is W10, the gym that has given us inspiration again; it’s been a long time coming. Read about our 30 day trial there here. Also west, we checked out the shiny new SoulCycle in Notting Hill. As for a pick-me-up, we headed to Harvey Nicks for a 15-minute LED facial (15 minutes = light bright) at the Light Salon (go!), and a Thalgo wrap at the Beyond MediSpa for some drainage. We also finally made it into a name we kept seeing pop up on people’s instagram – Tarryn Warren – for one of her much loved facials; do believe the hype, more on this in the new year. Now all we have to do is muster up some courage for Cryo – at £80 for three minutes, it better be worth the pain!

All We Want for Christmas

Veuve under the tree please

We love a Veuve Clicquot personalised box (hint, hint) and this year’s arrow has a new, metallic finish (swoon). If you too are a frequent buyer of these as gifts, you can now enjoy a glass of Champagne or a cocktail in their concept store, ‘Le Tram’, in Selfridges (ground floor, Beauty Workshop) while you wait. Pull up one of 10 stools, escape the crowds, and enjoy the ‘ride’.

Save the Dates

Anyone remember the Pharcyde (Runnin’)? Well they’re coming to Cargo (better yet, remember Cargo??) on 16 Dec. And now we have two fun ones. Carols at the Royal Albert Hall… you know you want to (21-24 Dec). If you can’t face that, RAH also has Trevor Nelson’s Soul Christmas (16 Dec) and Handel’s Messiah (18 Dec). For some throwback fun, The Muppet Christmas Carol is at the Southbank (22 Dec). Soak up that holiday cheer, it’s only once a year!
