Head just south of the river to find Quo Vadis’s little sister, El Pastór. Tacos might be ten a penny in London, but Sam and Eddie Hart’s Southwark taqueria puts authentic techniques at the centre of the operations, setting El Pastór far and apart from the wannabes (look out for the on-site trompo grill and tortilla factory if you don’t believe us). The sesame tuna tostadas get us every time, and you can’t leave without trying the namesake al pastór taco, with 24 hour marinated pork shoulder, pineapple and guacamole. Yes, the queues do get long, but they’ll take your number so you can decamp to a local bar, and text you when a table is ready – it’s worth it. And from 13th April, if the queue really is too long at the weekend, skip over to Maltby Street Market and find Tortilleria El Pastor (open Thu-Sun) under the railway arches. The tortillas factory makes fresh tortillas from scratch every day, as well as sopes (which corn mini maize cakes piled with toppings) and fresh-made salsas.
