EARLY TO RISE

London has come a long way since the days of full English and Continental breakfasts. From Indian to Southern American to Antipodean and Spanish, breakfast has boomed. And it shows no sign of slowing down. London, it seems, has finally woken up.

The Antipodean fusion wave continues. Besides the usual smashed avo on toast, the newly opened Dickie Fitz in Fitzrovia “nods to clean Californian and Australian cuisine” with spiced fruit salad, buttermilk waffles, and zucchini fritters – and from 7.30am. Over in Marylebone, Australian/Italian restaurant Bernardi’s has just launched its new brunch menu. Head in for poached eggs with gnocchi, breakfast pizzas and their take on a ‘full Italian’ in a breakfast bun (a chilli sausage patty, topped with a fried egg, n’duja sauce, pancetta, and fontina cheese).

On the Indian front, Dishoom has dominated the Indian AM menu for some time now. But now, adding some competition, Kricket in Brixton has just launched its Sunday brunch menu. Go for riffs on Indian classics, such as duck egg bhurji with smoked haddock, masala butterbeans with poached eggs and Goan sausage rolls, rounded off with Bloody Maharajas and spiced rum masala chais.

For a taste of a Southern American fry up, Shotgun’s Sunday hangover busting brunch menu features plates of brisket rolls, truffled grits, short rib chilli con carne and tostadas, washed down with green probiotic Bloody Marys, banana daiquiris and Lucky Charm cocktails.

Speaking of breakfast cocktails: we’ve been drinking chai martinis at Blake’s in Kensington, spagliatos at Eggbreak in Notting Hill, black margaritas at the Ham Yard Hotel and breakfast sours at Jackson and Rye in Soho – all before 10am.
