Weekend Guide

This weekend guide is brought to you by álaMODE.se - the one-stop site for fashionable Sweden.

What's better than a month that sees the full bells and whistles emergence of summer? Why, that same month with the addition of not one, but two Bank Holidays, that's what. Yes, I know you'd just gotten back into the 5-day-per-week swing of things, but it's time to let loose again. And then again in another few weeks. For now, though, with this many gigs, clubs, parties, fairs, drinks, and performances on hand, it simply has to be a great one.

And in case you hadn't gotten our hint so far: Sweden is cheap right now. And we mean cheap. Throw into that a wealth, nay barrage of top fashion stores - big name and indie alike - and a veritable army of sleek restaurants, cafés and bars, and it's got to make you wonder why you're still even sitting at your desk reading this. With the long weekend upon us, if you haven't booked anything yet, you know where we're recommending. Click here for a little inspiration...

FRIDAY

musicNeon Noise Project
I remember my last Fischerspooner gig. Okay, not really. I remember getting dressed before the gig though. And with silver spandex leggings, high-heeled white leather ankle boots, and glow sticks dangling around my neck I thought I'd be the coolest chick in da club. Perhaps it was me looking like an idiot that scared Fischerspooner into not coming back for 3 years... Anyway, tickets are disappearing like crazy but we hear there are a few left.

nightlifeSpirit of Speyside Whisky Festival
December might have Christmas and September its long, balmy evenings, but May is clearly the best month of the whole year. I mean, what's not to love about Whisky Month? If you're at all like me (i.e. the blood in your veins is in fact 43%ABV scotch) then skip the foreplay and head straight to Scotland for the Spirit of Speyside. Or at least raid London's Whisky Exchange and Albannach in honour.

Time:
May 1-10; times vary
Place:
Throughout the Speyside region of Scotland
Cost:
Various

TODAY
When will I, will I be famous?
Well we CAN answer that, because tonight's every fame-whore's chance who lucked out with Simon Cowell. Get your dancing shoes on for another t-mobile flash dance event down at Trafalgar Square, following on from their Liverpool Street Station storm. Be a part of advertising history.

SATURDAY

art 20th Century Design Fair
Assuming it's a glorious day (although I've probably just jinxed the bloody thing), there are few more charming ways to while away your Saturday afternoon. Gorgeous 20th Century (sigh, seems so long ago) furniture and objets d'art on display and up for sale beside the calming ripple of the open-air pool… and just in case it p*sses it down, tea and homemade cake. I've put dibs on that rolling rocking chair, though, so don't even think about it.

10am-4pm

Brockwell Lido, Brockwell Park, Dulwich Rd, SE24 0PA

This week's ORIGINAL pick: Eastern Electrics
With bells on - and for the crazy ones amongst you, maybe even a gasmask and a cheeky pair of white gloves - it's time to revisit the old days and some of the best (and worst) parties you ever experienced. Oh yes: car park raves. Get ready for an outrageous 10-hour extravaganza with Zomby, 2000 and One, Metro Area and more. Pretty cool also is the mention of 'executive toilets' (dying to find out what that involves).

Time:
9pm-7am
Place:
Union Car Park, Great Suffolk Street, SE1 0NR
Cost:
£10

Swatch Watch by Manish Arora
After a storming A/W 09/10 show in Paris last season, Indian designer Manish Arora is bringing his vivid colours and kitsch motifs to the happy clappy world of Swatch. Blame it on the sunshine, but we're feeling decidedly bright and cheery. Which is why we're in the mood for a little Bollywood style timekeeping.

ArtLondon 'Zine Symposium
Ever wondered what your superhero alter-ego would be? The UJ office would probably be filled with winged and bespectacled overlords wielding giant martini glasses. Not a cartoonist's finest work by any stretch. But stretched out imaginations is exactly what you'll find here, as homebrewed magazines, comics and the people who make them come together for cake and workshops galore. And yes, the cake is vegan.

djTayo's Tracksuit Party
Go ahead. Do it. Release your inner chav. Grab your finest bits of nylon - hell, just rock up in last night's sweatpants that you watched Britain's Got Talent in (including curry stains). It's time to let loose, like, completely, and literally. Besides the usual hip hop, disco and funk factor expect something mega exclusive during this Bank Holiday special: A-Have-A-Go-Hip-Hop-Karaoke. Oh Yeah.

3pm-3am

Old Queen's Head, 44 Essex Road, N1 8LN

danceBreakin' Convention 09
If your idea of breaking convention is to skip Mummy's Sunday or go crazy at the Opera minus-tie, this'll freak the pants right off your tired ass. UJ are not terribly adept at the language of Diddy, but we're putting new shoes on our ride (getting tires on the car) and busting a move down to this hippity hoppity dance, music and graffiti gathering in hopes of learning a thing or two from the experts.

4 pm.

djAITBF Weekender
I know it's Monday. I know you have work tomorrow, you're tired, your kidneys hurt, and you've spent far too much this weekend. But it's a Bank Holiday, so quit your whining and head over to the final part of the Adventures In The Beetroot Field four-day extravaganza (assuming you're not there already). I would tell you who's playing, but we're a little limited on space here. Let's just say they're all brilliant. And several. And be done with it.

The Fellow
It doesn't matter how much people bang on about the Kings Cross regeneration and gush about how bustling and cosmopolitan it all is now, to me Kings Cross is still, and will probably always be, Kings Cross.

There is however a welcome new addition to the area in the form of The Fellow, a former coach house (I'm guessing) next to the station that has undergone a major regeneration. There's the pub and dining room downstairs in muted olive tones and white brick tiles, a more low-slung and retro 'cocktail lounge' upstairs called The Black Door which has its own entrance from the street and leads out to a very fine roof terrace, and a private dining room at the top.

Foodwise it's in the meat department that chef Nick Leonard excels, with things like mini venison burger with goats cheese and chorizo to start and herby homemade Old Spot sausages served simply with potato salad. Or there are sharing plates for two of rib of beef that comes piled high with excellent chips or whole sea bass stuffed with wild garlic served with new potatoes and aioli. All at a reasonable price too.

And wines are divided into styles like 'Elegant and Mineral' and 'Warm and Spicy' which, being a beginner oenophile I always find helpful.

Now perhaps the owner would be a good fellow and open his next pub on the Northcote Road.
