Weekend Guide

You can feel it in the air, can't you. Next weekend sees another four-day expanse of unlimited carnage and recovery time (sigh - the troubles of a double Bank Holiday May in London)...

Until then, however, this weekend is all easy, long evenings of stimulation: a bit of live music, a little retail therapy, some art, talks, late night cultural inspiration and just a splash of experiential clubbing. Call it a warm-up; call it a breather; call it whatever you like… just call it your weekend. Now go out and claim that slippery sod.

FRIDAY

musicEbony Bones
If exclusive designer products, pantone 109 bags and gay bingo in the yellow café weren't enough to drive you to Selfridges for their centenary celebrations, we're sure this'll do the trick. Bringing her crayola-coloured circus crew in-store for a live appearance this evening, Ebony Bones' post-punk performance promises to remind you, against Coldplay's morose wishes, that it's not ALL yellow.

Time:
8pm
Place:
Selfridges, 400 Oxford Street, W1A 1AB
Cost:
Free

Well, at least The Roundhouse has got the musical side to that little fantasy covered. Erol Alkan's Disco 3000, Jeff Mills, and Moderat help remind you just what you're almost missing.

SATIRE IS IN

When the state of the nation takes such an unequivocal nose dive, the only thing we can do as Britons is poke a little fun at ourselves.

So, after covering such weighty political issues as David Cameron's 'Blair-like' mannerisms; Westminster's escalating expense bills and Alistair Darling's doomsday budget; Schweppes have given us the perfect way to get a seat on the London Underground System.

Head over to schyouknowwho.com to see why Experience Matters.

dj3D Disco Goes 360
Never have those red and blue anaglyph glasses been so cool as now. First Marios Schwab used them as his fashion show invite, and now they're heralding the world premiere of the NOVAK collective's Smirnoff-funded, fully-immersive 360 degree environment. With flying disc projections, headphones materialising as if from nowhere, and a soundtrack of some of the best dance music in town, prepare yourself for a hallucinogenic audiovisual experience like no other.

SUNDAY

MusicAn Evening With Garrison Keillor
Satirist, musician, columnist, author and legendary voice of American radio, there isn't much that Garrison Keillor can't do. And this one-off evening of lyrical nirvana offers an (unfortunately rare) opportunity to catch the inimitably charming chap himself as he regales with his all-American tales, poetry and witty limericks, accompanied by music from the glorious City of London Sinfonia, as conducted by Philip Brunelle.

Time:
7pm
Place:
Cadogan Hall, 5 Sloane Ter, SW1X 9DQ
Cost:
£10-32 adv.

artMuseums at Night
Part of this year's Europe-wide La Nuits des Musées festival, our most famous and obscure museums alike are going bump in the night this weekend. So whether it's 1940s boogying on a battleship or gaslit surgery Victorian-style, late night cookery books or a champagne and candlelight tour of John Soane's Museum, if you're feeling even a little low on the culture scale, tonight is the night. And last night. Oh, and technically the night before that too.

Time:
Fri May 15 - Sun May 17
Place:
Museums throughout London, and indeed Europe
Cost:

SHOP

Selfridges 100th Birthday
We're loving Selfridges 100th Birthday celebrations and are swooning over Giles' googly eyes and pantone 109 carrier bags. But if you can't afford yellow Choos (£485) and fancy something less alcoholic than Absolut's tribute vodka (£39.99), we'd plump for Coca Cola's limited edition centenary bottles.

£1.29, Selfridges.

EAT & DRINK

No.20
I've always found Mark Fuller an intriguing figure. Famously outspoken, the man behind eighties club Embassy now cuts a swathe in his posh West London chippy Geales and his boutique Berkshire hotel Inn On The Green, usually somewhat conspicuously in black leather biker gear.

At least in his latest creation, Sanctum Soho, the groovy new hotel designed to attract music and media types, he doesn't stick out quite so much. Fuller and some fellow fat cats have spent £10 million here creating 'crash pad' rooms, designed with 'after-party sex liaisons' in mind and filling the mini-bars with massage oils and saucy scanties.

But despite all that Fuller also knows a thing or two about food and always manages to find the right chef for the job. So, although the hotel might not be quite my thing, the food at No.20 most certainly is.

Former L'Escargot chef Gavin Austin is a dab hand at Brit comfort food with a twist. A zingy prawn cocktail is heaving with juicy king prawns and comes with a nice salsa of avocado and tomato in the bottom of the glass, the lemon sole with spinach and nut butter is just right and puddings like lemon sponge with ginger ice cream really hit the spot.

The room lends itself more to dinner than breakfast or lunch so go in the evening and maybe you'll be tempted to get a room.
