Weekend Guide

This weekend guide is brought to you by álaMODE.se - the one-stop site for fashionable Sweden.

With one bank holiday down and one just around the (fortnight-long) corner, we're sensing a slight vibe of "stay low and take cover" in the air. And since it looks like the weather might just hold out, whether you escape in your frillies to a Buckinghamshire manor, take in a little artistic culture, or tempt fate with the Dalston Superstore boys, we just know it's going to be everything you could wish for.

And in case you hadn't gotten our hint so far: Sweden is cheap right now. And we mean cheap. Throw into that a wealth, nay barrage of top fashion stores - big name and indie alike - and a veritable army of sleek restaurants, cafés and bars, and it's got to make you wonder why you're still even sitting at your desk reading this. With the long weekend upon us, if you haven't booked anything yet, you know where we're recommending. Click here for a little inspiration...

FRIDAY

musicDeadly House Party
House parties are fun - until they end up with someone in tears. Which is not so fun. And that's why we prefer Deadly House Parties. Because there are cleaners + bouncers + people who serve cocktails instead of warm beer. Other than that there are ace performers and word class DJs that play tunes they'd play at their best friend's house party, including Radioclit, A-Trak and Rye Rye (you know, her from that M.I.A. track).

Time:
9pm-5am
Place:
The Arches, 51-53 Southwark Street, SE1 1RU
Cost:
£8
Info:

White Blackbird
Dust off your finest '50s sleepwear - those satin negligees and silk smoking jackets that you have knocking around gathering dust - and prepare for an evening-long escapade of right ol' frolics, as the entire Stoke Place estate opens its gates to Victorian séances, midnight feasts, cabaret performances, swinging DJs, and a rolling backdrop of real, live sheep for decoration. The Big Smoke or The Grand Manor? Tough call, I know.

Time:
8pm-3am
Place:
Stoke Place, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, SL2 4HT
Cost:
£35, return coaches to and from London available for £15
Info:

SATURDAY

Fancy seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses? Then head down to the Gagosian, where Cy Twombley's latest freestyle pieces blurring the line between painting and poetry are wrapping up their residency. Five, stunning paintings consisting of wooden panels depicting roses in full bloom sit alongside extracts from Rilke's poem 'The Roses.' The only thorn on the rose? This is the exhibition's very last day.

Time:
10am-6pm
Place:
Gagosian, 6-24 Britannia Street, WC1X 9JD
Cost:
Free

djDisco Bloodbath
After Dalston being called called 'the coolest place in Britain' by The Guardian last weekend, we're not sure how difficult it is for the boys behind Dalston Super Store to 'keep it real' in their 'hood. But we're sure there'll be the usual crowd of queenie ravers, fag hags and club kids with crazy undercuts rocking out with their c*cks out at Disco Bloodbath - London's one and only true Party Monsteresque night.

Time:
9pm-4am
Place:
Dalston Super Store, 117 Kingsland High Street, E8 2PB
Cost:
Free

BOOK AHEAD

Tunnel 228
From the Masque of the Red Death chaps, this Punkdrunk event (that we're not entirely sure of the name of because it's sooo underground) will be one of those things you'll hate yourself forever for if you miss it. Tunnels in Waterloo have been transformed into a surreal playground that, for 15 days only, will stage aerial acts and a plethora of artistry. Time slots are disappearing quickly so book your (free) ticket now.

SUNDAY

TheatreWaiting For Godot
At the time of writing, there were still a handful of circle tickets left… but whether you chose to book ahead with jittery anticipation or risk last-minute returns, this is one theatre event that really shouldn't be missed. Despite being a ripe half-century old, Sam Beckett's quirky Waiting For Godot is one respected quinquagenarian. And when it's played out by the killer tag-team of Jean-Luc Picard and Gandalf, then that's just art.

Time:
3pm (runs Tues-Sun until June 29)
Place:
Theatre Royal Haymarket, Haymarket, SW1Y 4HT
Cost:
£15-£47.50
Info:

artLuke Fowler
If the story of your life were made into a film, how would it look? Madcap rom-com or traumatic drama? Dashing hero or down-on-his-luck protagonist? Either way, Glaswegian filmmaker Luke Fowler has perfected the art of the cinematic collage, breaking down biographical films with impressionistic sound and editing. Atmospheric pieces which engage with their subjects - including English composer Cornelius Cardew and institutionalised David Bell - are now at the Serpentine.

Time:
10am-6pm
Place:
Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, W2 3XA
Cost:
£5, free before 7pm

EAT & DRINK

L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon
If you like swanky restaurants you've probably read a fair few reviews of Joel Robuchon's 2 Michelin-starred London outpost. You might also know that JR was just awarded the San Pellegrino Lifetime Achievement Award. What you might not know however, and what certainly came as a surprise to me, is how warm, inviting and darned seductive the place is.

L'Atelier, the gorgeously low lit ground floor counter-dining room is more stylishly cluttered than I expected, with jars of acid green limes and blood red macaroons stacked above the Japanese style open kitchen. Upstairs in La Cuisine, the more conventionally set out bistro-style dining room, it's all black and white chessboard tiles, banquettes and potted herbs. And in neither room is there an ounce of stuffy formality - in fact I think M. Robuchon must be slipping his staff happy pills.

I won't ramble on for hours about the food as I think you probably know the score, but suffice to say my roast Label Anglais chicken with girolles was as perfect as it gets, and the truffled pomme puree (rumoured to be made with 60 % butter) is something else.

Oh, and the bar at the top has a fireplace and its own well-hidden roof terrace that's just opened for the summer.

Altogether the experience has made me realise that dining out right now is all about quality not quantity.

I'm saving up for my next visit.
