Weekend Guide

When it comes to distractions, London's a fickle city. Up-and-down, up-and-down like little social yo-yos. We go crazy for the Bank Holidays, mellow in between and after, until, one little weekend spent recovering in the sunshine later and bang! we're all back on form.

Mass musical performances, cabaret, contemporary art raves, boozey birthdays, a smattering of vintage. Take a deep breath and get out there, dear readers - there's really no excuse. Have fun and play nicely now.

SATURDAY

NightlifeDanceschool: Lesson One
Ah, 'Contemporary Arts'. It's a curious category to be sure. Plagued by scared-of-its-own-shadow postmodernism, you can fit pretty much anything beneath its gargantuan umbrella. And going by tonight that even includes the not-so-humble nightclub. Disco, hip-hop, garage, Balearic beats, old school rave... with the whole ICA turned into one vast club, there's everything from top tunes to cultural commentary, legendary promoters to a mammoth hangover - and all in the name of art, naturally.

Time:
10pm-4am
Place:
ICA, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH
Cost:
£9 adv.

ShopGiant Vintage Jumble Sale
Once upon a time I ran a vintage stall in Portobello. I met a guy there. Let's call him 'Angry Man'. He's a vintage buyer and shops for a living, day in, day out. He knows a bargain when he sees it, and goes over dead bodies to get it (hence the 'Angry'). He once told me about The East End Thrift Store. It's his favorite vintage spot in London. I'm sure he'll be there this weekend, so wear a helmet and some elbow protectors will ya?

EAT & DRINK

The Palm
It felt suitably summery going to steak restaurant The Palm last weekend - in a roller-skating along the strip in Miami, playing the slots in Vegas and hanging out with Mickey Rourke in West Hollywood way.

The Palm, which has just opened on Pont Street, has venues in all the above. There are in fact 28 of the places, some of which have been going since 1926, so the concept of great steak in classically metropolitan surroundings - wood paneling and those proper American booths - obviously works, as the caricatures of famous Palm customers that line the walls further testify to.

The staff were smiley, and keen to educate us on the merits of surf 'n' turf, the filets mignons were seriously good (I wouldn't focus too much on the starters, my calamari weren't much cop) but I couldn't help feeling a little too much like we were dining in one of a chain, complete with blasting air conditioning - they clearly haven't cottoned on to the fact that a balmy evening is something of a rarity over here.

So go if you want great all-American steak, or the equally as good Aberdeen Angus version they offer, but be prepared to fork out for it (the 7 oz USDA filet mignon rings in at a meaty £31 but I noticed on their website that you can get a 14oz with a starter and side for $39 on the other side of the Atlantic) and to get a bit chilly in the process.
