Go the Distance

The buzzword restaurants that are here to stay

Gone in a flash or here for the long run? We’ve surveyed 2018’s biggest restaurant trends; here are the ones that are set to last.

When Rita’s first appeared on the scene (we remember trying that chicken burger at Dalston’s Birthdays in 2012 like it was yesterday), there was no doubt about the hype. With 2018’s shop-and-restaurant crossover trend going strong (Quality Chop House Wine Bar, Lina Stores and St John Bakery, we’re looking at you) the news that Rita’s was also opening their ‘global deli and sandwich store’ at Coal Drop’s Yard came as no surprise. Keep an eye on their Instagram for more – this one’s going to be a firm favourite.

With by Chloe, Club Mexicana at The Spread Eagle and Gizzi Erskine’s Pure Filth, 2018 has been a good year to eat plant-based. Don’t roll your eyes at yet another opening though: we say go try out Genesis before judging for yourself.

And finally, hyper-specific: This trend has taken us across Spain, and Guangzhou and the Black Sea in search of ever-more-region-specific cuisine. Now get ready to take a culinary tour of China: the new Central Cross development in Chinatown will open this winter, with Sichuan restaurant JinLi as the first to be confirmed in the line-up – keep your ears to the ground.

To 2018 and beyond!
